Did I like the episode?  Not sure.  I thought that they could have done more with the mad bomber and a little less with Danny's brother.  The bombers motivation was interesting and could have been explored a bit more.  The problem there is I liked the scene where Steve, Danny, Rachel, Matt and a sleeping Grace are talking and laughing.  Handcuffed to a monkey cage indeed.  I liked how Steve was there for Danny all the way.  At the end I think that Danny should have gone to Steve and not Rachel.  I know that they still have feelings for each other and that she knew Matt and Steve didn't, but Steve is the one who was truly there for Danny, not Rachel.  So there were things I liked and things I didn't.  I suppose that's life, right?

Two more days until a new H5-0.  Can hardly wait.  We get to meet Danny's brother.  This should be interesting.  We get to see more of Grace which is cool.  This new bad guy looks like someone Steve should dangle off a roof.  Danny might even let him.  I guess I'll have to wait and see.  Sigh.

I thought that the father who paid part of the ransom was Edward Albert Jr.  I checked and Edward Albert Jr. died in 2006.  Now this is where I am confused.  He is credited for being in several movies from 2006 to 2010.  So is he dead, or is he like Mark Twain whose death was exagerated?  I'm soooo confused!

Disclaimer:  Hawaii 5-0 and characters belong to CBS, only the story is mine.

This popped into my head and I couldn’t continue working on a multi-chaptered story until I wrote this.  It is currently unbetaed since she is working on my longer story.  Anyway, hope you enjoy!

Powa Maka Moana Extended Ending

The case was closed and the paperwork was completed.  The 5-0 team was getting ready to head home.  Danny was making one last call before leaving.  He was worried about his partner.  He knew this case was tough on him and even though they succeeded in rescuing all but one of the teenagers, he knew it had brought up Steve’s memories of his kidnapped father.  Danny did not want Steve to sit in his father’s house alone tonight, so he was going to try and do something about it.

He waited for his ex-wife to answer her phone.  “Hello Rachel.”  Pause.  “No, no I’m fine.  I need to ask you a favor.  I know this is not my weekend with Grace but I was hoping we could switch.”  He listened for a moment.  “I know this is short notice but it’s important.  Did you hear about the teenagers that were kidnapped and rescued?”  He listened to her response.  “Yeah, that was us.  To be honest Rachel this favor really isn’t for me.  You see Steve’s dad was held hostage and killed when Steve was forced to kill the kidnapper’s brother.”  He heard her gasp on the other end of the phone.  “I know that this case brought up bad memories for Steve and I really don’t think he should be alone tonight, or this weekend.  I also thought it would help if he could spend some time with Grace.”  He stopped to listen.  “Thank you Rachel, I really appreciate it.  When can I pick up Grace?”  He nodded as he listened.  “I’ll see you in 30 minutes.”

Once Danny was ready to leave, he stepped into Steve’s office, glad he caught him.  “You want to share some beer tonight?”

Steve looked up when he heard Danny speak.  “Yeah.  That would be great.  I’ll pick some up on my way home.”

Danny nodded.  “I need to run home and change.”  Steve pretended to look shocked.  “Yes, I said change.  I also have a quick errand to run.  I’ll pick up some Chinese for supper.  That way we don’t have to fight over pizza topping.”  Steve smirked.  “So I’ll see you when I get done.”

“Sounds good Danno.  Bring a change of clothes and you can sleep in the spare room.”

“Don’t call me that and I will.”  Was said as Danny walked out of Steve’s office.  At this point, Danny really didn’t mind and Steve knew it; it was more of a habit to make the token protest.

Danny had stopped at his apartment to change and pack for the weekend.  He was reasonably sure that Steve would invite them to spend the weekend.  He arrived at Rachel’s when he said he would.  He pressed the security button and was allowed in.  He parked the Camaro and stepped out.

Rachel opened the door as he was walking up the steps.  “Grace is almost ready Daniel.”

“Thanks Rachel.  I really appreciate this.”

“You’re welcome.  Cmdr. McGarrett is a good man and Grace adores him.  I will let you decide whether or not to tell her about the Commander’s father.”

“I will tell her but leave out the specifics.  She would notice if Steve’s sad or not and it will help if she knows why.”  Rachel nodded agreeing with him.

Before they could say more a small bullet ran into Danny hugging him.  “Hey Monkey!”  He picked her up.  “You ready to go?”

Grace nodded enthusiastically.  “I have everything I need.  Mom said we were going to see Uncle Steve so I packed my bathing suit.”

“We are Monkey.”  Danny put Grace down.  “Now grab your backpack and I’ll take your bag.”  They grabbed their respective bags, Danny turned to Rachel.  “Thanks again.  Have a good weekend.”

“No trouble Daniel.  Have a nice weekend Sweetheart.  I love you.”  Rachel bent down to kiss Grace Good-bye.

“Bye Mom, love you too.”

The two Williams walked down the stairs and to the Comaro and place Grace’s bags in the trunk.  Danny squatted down so he could talk to Grace before opening the door.  “Danno needs to tell you something before we go see Uncle Steve.”

“Is Uncle Steve okay?”  Grace looked very concerned.

Danny took a deep breath.  “I don’t know Monkey.  We had a really tough case that brought up some bad memories for Uncle Steve.  You see 5-0 was asked to find and return some kidnapped teenagers.  These cases don’t always go well.”  Grace looked very sad.  Danny caressed her cheek.  “We were very lucky this time and saved all but one of the teenagers.”

Grace smiled.  “So why would Uncle Steve be sad about that?”

Danny rubbed his hand on his cheek.  “Well you see, Uncle Steve’s father was held hostage.  The bad man wanted Uncle Steve to do something bad for him.  Uncle Steve wasn’t able to do what the man wanted so he killed Steve’s dad.”  Grace’s eyes got big and tears formed in them.  Danny hugged her.  “There really wasn’t anything that Uncle Steve could have done differently, but I think he still blames himself for his father’s death.”  Danny pulled back from Grace so he could look her in the eyes.  “I know that it would make Uncle Steve feel better to see you and spend some time with you.  I just wanted to you know that if Uncle Steve gets sad or a little distant during the weekend you would know why.”

Grace looked at her father for a moment thinking about what she learned.  “Would you mind if I hugged Uncle Steve more than I hug you this weekend?”

Danny smiled, he was so proud of his daughter.  “No, it would make me happy if you can help Uncle Steve.  Danno knows that you love him.”  He hugged her.  “Now let’s go pick up some Chinese to bring with us to Uncle Steve’s house.”  Danny got Grace settled in the back seat and climbed into the driver’s seat.  The two waved to Rachel as they left.  Neither saw the tear that rolled down her cheek after listening to Danny and Grace talk about Steve.

Danny and Grace arrived at Steve’s in short order.  Grace grabbed the Chinese food and headed for the door while Danny got their bags.

Grace had wanted to be the one to knock on the door and see Steve first.  So as soon as she got to the door she knocked and waited.

The door was soon opened and Steve said.  “Bout time you got….”  He stopped when he realized that Grace was standing in front of him instead of Danny.  “Gracie, what are you doing here?  I thought Danno didn’t have you until next weekend?”  He looked up to see Danny coming towards them with his and Grace’s bags smiling.

Steve got down on one knee so that he could give Grace a hug.  “Danno said that you were sad and we didn’t want you to be alone.”  She hugged him as tightly as she could.

Steve hugged her fiercely.  He looked up at Danny, gratitude was shining in his eyes, Danny smiled at him understanding.  “Thank you Grace.  I’m glad you and your Danno are here.”  After a moment he picked her up effortlessly grabbing the bag of Chinese she had put down.  “I see you brought supper.  Let’s go and eat out on the Lanai.”

“Okay Uncle Steve.  It’s too late to go swimming isn’t it?”

He looked at Danny mischievously who rolled his eyes.  “You’re right; it is too late to go swimming.  But we could light some torches near the water’s edge and could make a sandcastle and play in the shallow water.”  That received a wide grin.  “Danno can sit in one of my chairs and supervise.  Wouldn’t want to get sand in his shorts.”  Grace giggled.

“Oh, very funny Aquaman.  Let’s eat, I’m starved.”  He put the bags down just inside the door after shutting it.  The three walked into Steve’s kitchen to get plates and cutlery before going out to the Lanai.

Once the meal had been consumed Steve and Danny cleaned up while Grace changed into her bathing suit and a pair of shorts.  While the men were putting the dishes in the dishwasher, Steve stopped Danny placing a hand on his shoulder.  “Thanks Danny.  I appreciate you bringing Grace over.  I just thought that you didn’t have her this weekend.”

“I didn’t.  I called Rachel and asked if we could switch.  When she asked why I told her about the case and your father.”  Steve looked away briefly.  “Once she knew why, she said I could have her this weekend and keep my regular weekend.”  Steve’s eyes widened slightly.  “Yeah, my reaction too.  But Rachel and I have been doing a little better since the whole carjacking thing.”  He shrugged.  “I just hope this lasts.”

Steve squeezed his shoulder.  “Me too.  I know how much seeing Grace means to you.  Thank you for sharing her with me this weekend.”

“Steve, my daughter adores her ‘Uncle Steve’ and would have wanted to help.  Besides we’re ohana and we stick together.”

“Did you tell her about my Dad?”

“I told her that your father was held hostage to make you do something bad.  When you couldn’t do it, the bad man killed your dad.”  Steve closed his eyes and started to turn away.

Grace heard the last part of the conversation.  So she walked up to Steve and hugged his legs.  He looked down at her.  “It’s not your fault Uncle Steve that the bad man killed your Dad.  He wanted you to do something bad and your Dad wouldn’t want you to do it.  I know your Dad would be proud of you.  I am.”  Steve got down on his knees so he could hug her properly.  Danny knelt down and wrapped his arms around Grace and Steve when he realized that there were tears in Steve’s eyes.  Steve pulled one arm from around Grace to include Danny.  They stayed in a three-way hug for a few minutes.

Steve managed to get himself under control again.  He gave both Grace and Danny a squeeze before pulling back to look at them.  “Thank you Grace.”  He touched her cheek gently.  “Now how about we get the torches so that you can build a sandcastle?”  She nodded with a smile.  The three stood up and headed out to Steve’s backyard.

In a few minutes they had several Tiki torches set up and a beach chair next to a blanket.  Once that was done Steve sent Grace off to start on her castle.  He turned to Danny.  “You’re very lucky to have her.”

“I know.”

“I’m lucky to have you for a partner, even if you don’t like Hawaiian pizza.”  With that Steve headed off to help Grace snickering.

Danny shook his head.  He decided not to rise to Steve’s bait.  He knew the man had needed to step away from all of the emotions that had been floating around.  He was grateful that Steve was his partner too.  He settled in his chair to watch his partner and daughter play in the sand.

The three had a great weekend together.  On Saturday, Steve, Danny and Grace had gone to see one of the battleships that were docked at Pearl Harbor.  Steve was even able to get permission for the three to have a brief tour of the ship.  Grace had asked all sorts of questions and Steve or their guide answered as many as they could.

That night Steve had a barbeque which he had invited Chin, Kono and Kamekno to attend.  The six people had a great time.

Sunday saw Steve giving Grace another surfing lesson.  Chin and Kono came by to spend the day at the beach with their team.  That evening Steve and Danny dropped Grace off at Rachel’s.  Steve had wanted to thank Rachel personally for letting Danny have Grace for the weekend so that they could spend it with him.  He knew that if Danny hadn’t brought Grace he would have spent the weekend brooding, instead he had a good weekend with his ohana.

When Danny dropped Steve back at his place Steve invited him to stay for supper and a couple of beers.  Danny readily accepted.  They ordered pizza, two to be exact.  One Hawaiian and one cheese pizza if you please.

That was the end of a very good weekend.
